Barry Ferguson Commits Future To Blues

Barry Ferguson has told Alex McLeish that he would be happy to stay with Birmingham, but admits that may be out of his hands.

The former Rangers and Blackburn man is one of a number of players to be tipped with summer exits from St Andrew's following Blues' relegation from the top flight.

Ferguson admits he is still coming to terms with relegation but, with one year still left on his contract, the midfielder is planning to return for pre-season in July.

But with several Premier League clubs keeping tabs on Blues transfer plans, Ferguson may yet be the target of bids during the summer transfer window.

The 33-year-old told the Scottish Herald: "I have spoken to the manager already. I have a contract for one more season at Birmingham and, unless anything changes, I will report back for pre-season training on July 4. He knows that.

"These things are out of your hands as a footballer. I have been here a few times before in my career when there is uncertainty about where your future may lie, but you can't control it. I am a Birmingham player until anyone comes and tells me anything different."

Glad to see he is staying but his game time should be limited next year. We need a mixture of experience and youth to get back into the Premier League and hopefully he can play a part in getting us back up.

I guess this will be similar to others such as Foster, Dann, Gardner... all of whom have intimated that they are happy to stay at Blues. Just remains to be seen whether any realistic or 'too good to refuse' offers come in. The vultures are circling with their cheque books methinks!

I just hopes if he stays he doesn't play entirely defensive like he has the campaign just gone, I would like him to advance up the pitch like he did in the Everton game last year and score my favourite goal we have scored for the last 2 seasons.

I think a lot of players have relegation clauses in their contract so his wage should drop for next season.

Whenever he has attacked we have played well, i dont see why he feels the need to sit on the half way line and for every other pass to go to him. Part of me thinks he needs to go and we need a more youthful midfield of Fahey, Gardner and Mutch. NO point keeping him for the prem as hell be 34/35.

Good squad player, but like lee bowyer i think his its the time for a fresh start

This is good, but he needs to look at his game just as much as McLeish needs to look at his tactics.

Plus, he shouldn't be automatically on the team sheet if he's not producing the goods.

But, when he is on his game, we couldn't wish for a better midfielder.

Gardner and Ferguson in the middle? yes please.

Just need some FAST wing-play and fast hungry strikers.

Have you ever considered he may have been playing to 'tactical instructions' as handed down from Mr McLeish?

He's not a Premiership player but he might be able to cope in the Championship as back up for the more talented Fahey. On the other hand if he finds the Championship a bit of a problem he could always go back to Rangers where I'm sure he'd find his niche.

A big problem was that players were not making forward runs or were being too statci fro Ferguson to play balls forward to them. A lot of the time Carr and Ridgewell were the only player getting themselvews into space. I think Ferguson being labelled as a backwards or sideways passer is unfair, not enough of our players were willing runners. If we play more attack minded players I think he will have more success.

And that is probably the last time he had bust a gut to get forward for us. As a centre-midfielder to have only a couple goals and a handful of assists in 2 seasons is not good enough.

A perfect player in a 4-5-1 where he can rely on the other 2 CM's to advance, but in a 4-4-2 he needed to take more responsibility.

cant believe alot are writting Fergie off, one of the players that can actually make a pass, keep the ball and people want rid. his job is to sit infront of the back 4 and pass the ball, job done, this helps gardner get up the pitch, we played with 2 wingers all season or Hleb in the hole, or 2 strkers, its not up to Fergie to be the creative one.

Actually, now that I think it through maybe he wouldn't be adequate cover for Fahey.

That goal against Everton was unbelieveable and if it was Man Utd scoring that everyone would of been going mad over it.

Shame that kind of play was few and far between.

Finding space and always being available for a pass in an undervalued commodity in a player. Defenders need an out ball if they aren't to punt it long all the time, which means the opposing team just comes straight back at you. This is what BF provides and an option that will be missed if he moves on.

Personally I expect him to leave, the quotes I have seen including the one at the start of this thread list he has not heard anything yet. I see it more as I am open to offers and would be surprised if a Stoke/Wolves/QPR or similar type team does not make an offer and based on his age this might be hard to turn down.

The way Ferguson plays for us is not his natural game, infact quite the opposite.

McLeish made several comments about this in his first season with us, he said that Ferguson would rather be romping forward and scoring goals, like he did week in week out at Rangers, this is also how he played at Blackburn, but with less success.

I remember Eck commenting on how they had to adjust and educate him as to how they wanted him to play...the role he plays now... and I remember Ferguson himself commenting that he wasn't used to playing like that, and he didn't like playing that way, but that he was prepared to do whatever job has been earmarked for him.

Interesting point: IF it is Mcleish's advice that Ferguson should sit in front of the back four playing amiable square passes that do nothing whatsover to damage the opposition then AM deserves the sack for this issue alone; like most posters on here I remember Ferguson's goal against Everton vividly because it was a beauty and
if that was the sort of football he was dishing up regularly at Blackburn and Rangers then I could understand what the fuss is about.

As BB has pointed out it is almost certainly at AM's bidding that BF plays so deep in a position where he can not possibly influence a game- sure he may give the back four a bit of protection but if he capable of delivering more decisive damage further upfield then he should be given his head and NOT be intruscted to look after CB's who are in any case capable of looking after themselves. Or is this yet another example of AM's tactical 'genius'?

As most of you will know I've been highly critical of BF but if its the case that once again our boneheaded manager has negated a player's efficiency by playing him out of position then I look forwrd to eating my words if and when Ferguson is allowed to play what many believe is his normal game.
